  1. It has been a few years now since the Home Office introduced the "citizenship test" for people to prove how much they know about life in the UK before taking up British passports.

I remember telling one friend from central Africa that there were multiple choice questions in the original test about what you should do in a range of typically British situations. One of them was set in a pub.

My friend said that the British pub may be a regular haunt for the Home Office workers who wrote the test, but what about passport applicants such as elderly Chinese women and devout Muslims? I assured him that the local pub is a real cornerstone of British life and culture and that it wasn't too outlandish to expect people to know about it, even if they don't drink.

He asked me what the question was. It was something like "You are in a typical British pub and you accidentally spill someone's pint. What should you do? Should you apologise; should you do nothing; or should you offer to buy them another drink?" The correct answer was "Buy them another drink."

My friend laughed "That is not the correct answer." he said "If you were really British, you would take them out into the car park and beat them up.".

  2. Wow! Very true. That story seems significant on many levels. I take it that is an example of a real question from the Home Office's citizenship test?

  3. I tried taking the test too, and fortunately, I passed on my first try. My many sleepless nights studying the official handbook and other resources paid off in the end, as I am now officially a British citizen! Currently, I am living here in the UK. The community's great, and the country's really impressive. I plan to stay here for a long, long time. :)
